The
Essential Life Skills Training...
A Breathwork Journey
with
Gilly
and David Montgomery, and Anne Smith
This
training has been running for the past seven years and continues
to change and evolve with differing participants and dynamics.
This is its joy, it even seems to have a life of its own at times!
The
aims of the training are both as a profound personal journey and
as a Rebirther Training. The Rebirther Training aspect is multi-level,
reflected by the past experience of the students.
The
core of the training is breathwork, namely Rebirthing or Conscious
Connected Breathing. We also include Pranayama and encourage learning
from the breath itself.
This
is a small training with a maximum of 11 participants, 1 apprentice
trainer and 3 trainers resulting in an intimate group. This gives
an experience of how to relate to others in day to day life from
the position of a valued member of a family. I believe that all
humans desire true heart connection and healthy, happy relationships.
Another
emphasis of the training is Spiritual Purification with a strong
focus on building a daily meditation practice, and we encourage
the participants to develop their own daily programme during the
course of the training.
The
training runs over a year in nine modules, 30 days, including
3-day weekends each month with longer modules at the beginning
and end. I find it effective working in this way as it gives the
participants the opportunity to integrate the training into their
everyday life and practice. They receive the support they need
from the trainers, and also from their peers in the form of buddies.
In addition, they are required to have rebirthing sessions between
modules.
As
trainers we teach from our experience, live what we teach and
walk our talk, so we completely involve ourselves in the group,
the rebirthing processes, sharing etc.
The
apprentice trainer is an experienced rebirther starting to run
his/her own workshops, one year seminars etc, and at times on
the training this is a very challenging position, given the way
that we work. They start more as an assistant and feel their way
towards trainer status, bringing their expertise and ideas into
the training.
The content of the training includes the theory and practice of
the breath, the elements and many forms of Rebirthing: dry and
wet, hot and cold, eye gaze, mirror work, tantric etc.
The Spiritual Purification aspect involves working with all the
elements of earth, air, fire and water for personal and space
energy management.
EARTH
- yoga, exercise, gardening, drumming, karma yoga (bringing
love and mindfulness into daily routine).
AIR - conscious breathing, chanting.
FIRE - sacred fires, hot tub
WATER - bathing, hot and cold tubs
MIND - core processing, visualisation, questioning SPIRITUAL
COMMUNITY - group dynamics, support groups.
The subjects covered range through the life process; conception,
birth, infancy, family patterns through childhood, puberty, independence/interdependence,
power, sex and money, death/rebirth, rhythms and cycles.

An
important aspect of the training is when we put on our other
hats: our 'going out into the world' hats. This includes
supervision for students who have started to see rebirthing
clients, or rebirth friends, are setting up their practice,
designing a brochure etc., discussing what support they
will receive over the coming month, personal assignments,
journal and portfolio projects. Students are expected to
produce a portfolio of their journey and give a self-assessment
on the completion module.
Anne
Smith has been on this journey
of participant, assistant, apprentice trainer, and now trainer
for the past three years. She has brought a wealth of knowledge
and warmth and her expertise is in group dynamics which
she taught in practice and theory for many years in adult
education. |
She
brings this emphasis into the group to illustrate individual behaviour
patterns within a group growing towards true community. This is
invaluable.
On
successful completion of the training and presentation of their
portfolio, students receive a certificate.
Our
professional body in the U.K. is the British Rebirth Society.
At the completion of the training some of the students may be
ready to present themselves as Professional Rebirthers provided
they have fulfilled the prerequisites for professional membership.
Others
may continue their training by joining the second year of the
ELS as an Apprentice Practitioner. We encourage the students to
join the society as an Apprentice Rebirther member as soon as
they start their professional practice. We support students in
honouring their own timing in becoming a professional Rebirther
and many take a year or two off to integrate the changes into
their life situation.
Others
may integrate it into their existing practice as, for example,
a Psychotherapist, and continue their supervision as part of that
practice. Whichever route they take it is imperative to continue
their supervision and support.
The
essence of this work is our personal soul journey, our humanness
and spirituality. Using the breath in this way embraces the Mystery,
allowing an unfolding unique to each of us. This is a training
for life and whether we choose to be breathworkers or continue
using this practice purely for ourselves, is equally relevant.
